Here they lived on a planet orbiting a red dwarf with two white dwarfs nearby, but now there are only remnants, ruins sustained by machines whose creators passed long ago. The scans showed the remains of a civilization, this entire species lived in just two systems, no gateways were found nearby, and we happened to find this system when we had to leave Subspace because of an anomaly. That seeded the universe with caches of knowledge, that filled the gaps between galaxies with portals that allow you to travel from one galaxy to another, that seeded life on so many worlds, the species that invented so many things we now use and that without them life wouldn't be possible. The species that built the gateway networks we now use to travel the stars. To this day, the countries of Human Space live in the shadow of the golden age that was Mankind United, as well as the traumatism of its totalitarianism, and its last remnant, the Olympian Commonwealth (Byzantine Empire analogue, with Mars being COnstantinople) still ahs dreams of restoring the ancient glory of humanity.The elders, the first ones, the ancients, forerunners, progenitors. This event led to the disitegration of MU, and the spawning of numerous warlords. In a matter of hours, Earth was rendered uninhabitable, and Mankind United had lsot its leadership. The escalation continued with the destruction of most of France with an antimatter terrorist bomb, followed by numerous other explosions. The unrest quickly spread to Earth, spawning large-scale insurrection, and civil war including in the very streets of the capital city of Mankind United, New York. After centuries of rule, the increasingly totalitarian regime was facing widespread unrest, starting from the Madinian Declaration of Independence, which were followed by guerillas on Brazza, Ambroise and many other worlds. It is under MU that Humanity knew its greates expansion, colonising thousands of worlds and sporting a population of several hundred billions. He was appointed Supreme Admiral, and made an entirely new Constitution, bringin an end to the UN and the creation of Mankind United. Schneider did away with democracy by making his new political party, the Party of Union the only allowed political Party. Only, corruption and political scandals shook the very fondations of the UN, and order was only restored when a general from the UN Army (and former Undersecretary of Defense) named Frank Schneider took power in a coup d'état. When Humans first started to colonize the stars, they were under the control of the United Nations, which had its power thouroughly extended through the centuries. Mankind United, as such,s erves the role of the ROman Empire, with Earth being Rome. In my opinion, the most important event that led to the rise of the Middle Ages was the fall of the Western Roman Empire and the end of the political domination of Rome over Europe, that allowed statelets to rise in the chaos, some expanding and forming lasting nations such as France. To explain mankind United, I have to explain the aim fo my world: reproduce the setting of the European Middle Ages ina world of Science-Fiction, with all the constraints that come with it (kinda similar to Honor Harrington being the Wars of the French Revolution in space). Not a precursor race (humans are the only focus of the setting, ALiens take a balce far away in the back), but a precursor nation: Mankind United. They can also retroactively erase their enemies from time- so perhaps they're only peaceful because everyone they didn't like never existed. While "eccentric," they're also a source of great wisdom and insight as a result of their long lives and unique perspective. A Guardian platform is the size of a frigate, and its capabilities may as well be magic- they perceive time in a non-linear way, they can alter reality around themselves and seem to consider basic causality more of a guideline than actual rules. Both are heavily degraded by time, but still serviceable. There used to be billions of Guardians- now there's only two known. The last remnants of their people created advanced machines called Guardians to shelter worlds with primordial life on them, so even after their own extinction, life could have a chance in the Milky Way. Indirectly, the Local Arm's races know that the ancients were wiped out in a galaxy-spanning war against another (presumably intergalactic) power. Beyond that, almost nothing is known of them directly. They existed millions of years before the present day as a sprawling galactic empire, and shared a singular culture and advanced technology. Mine does, though precious little is known about them.
